Welcome Mayor de Blasio!

Today Bill de Blasio becomes the 109th mayor of New York City. Here’s a look back at some of the city’s previous mayors:

William Jay Gaynor was the city’s 94th mayor. James J. Gallagher, a former city employee, attempted to assassinate Gayor by shooting him in the throat on August 9, 1910. The photograph by William F. Warnecke in the lower right of the collage shows the assassination attempt.

Fiorello H. La Guardia was the 99th mayor of New York City.

Sicilian-born Vincent R. Impelliterri served as the 101st mayor.

John V. Lindsay, the city’s 103rd mayor, was a member of the United States House of Representatives when this photograph was taken.

Ed Koch served three terms as the city’s 105th mayor. Richard Deagle used Koch’s catchphrase to criticize the city’s response to the AIDS epidemic.

Rudolph W. Guiliani was the city’s 107th mayor.
