Robert Rauschenberg, Earth Day, 1970
Robert Rauschenberg created this poster for the first Earth Day celebration in 1970. It is part of the Artists’ Poster Committee Collection, which includes more than 200 posters made for distribution in the 1960s and 70s to raise awareness of political and social issues, particularly the atrocities of the Vietnam War. Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Hans Haacke, Jon Hendricks, Jasper Johns, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Faith Ringgold, James Rosenquist, and Robert Smithson also participated in the ad hoc group, which was formed in 1969 as an offshoot of the Art Workers Coalition.
