James VanDerZee, [The Man Who Came Back], 1924
VanDerZee’s photographs document how the streets of Harlem became sites of political and intellectual engagement. Organizations planned rallies and parades to garner support of their causes, attracting sympathizers as well as curious onlookers. The poster in the background is for Raoul Walsh’s film, The Man Who Came Back (Twentieth Century Fox, 1924).
