Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung, December 21, 1933
Between 1930 and 1938 John Heartfield commented on the social and political situation through his satirical photomontages, which were published in the magazine Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung. The caption to Heartfield’s image (above left) in the December 21, 1933 issue reads: “Peace on Earth? No peace on earth, as long as the poor become poorer!” The photomontage has to be understood in relation to the cover of that same issue (not by John Heartfield) titled “Und Friede Auf Erden!” (“And peace on earth!”). The guns of an American battleship reminded the readers that during Christmas, politicians were preparing for more war to come.
