Acme Sign Shop, Providence

Harry Callahan, Acme Sign Shop, Providence, 1977

Like Walker Evans, Callahan was fascinated by signs—both their physical presence and their cultural significance. Well known for his black-and-white Chicago street photography and intimate portraits of his wife Eleanor, his early color work has not received the attention it deserves. ICP’s collection has a selection of dye transfer prints made in the late 1970s.
